ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an introduction to the psychology of exercise behavior as well as an overview of physical inactivity behavior and models of health behavior change. It reviews the use and effectiveness of conventional and innovative intervention modalities to increase physical activity behavior. The book also provides a foundation on several cross-cultural and demographic considerations that practitioners need to note within a diverse and multicultural society. It provides a comprehensive account of physical inactivity and sedentary behaviors in special populations and reviews strategies to address common issues to promote activity. The book outlines the effect of regular mindfulness practices on one's experience, and offers empirical evidence and practical implications of mindfulness for increased exercise adoption and adherence. It places a special emphasis on clients' cultural backgrounds to understand their habits and health behaviors.
