ABSTRACT
Modern Europe has been shaped by relating to otherness. From this vantage point, the history of the Jews can be employed as an illuminating lens: it set in motion an encounter with otherness within the Christian West. This chapter addresses the issue of Marranism, which brings up the “something else” within, having had a strong impact on European history, even if concealed and excluded.
