ABSTRACT
Professor Stigler has raised important questions in his provocative paper on the conservative bias of political economists, 1 but his unwillingness to adopt a broad enough historical and philosophical perspective has prevented him from providing wholly satisfactory answers. There is a sense in which a training in economics exercises a conservative influence, but it is doubtful whether Stigler has correctly interpreted the nature and causes of this influence.
