ABSTRACT

Writing the history of a revolution in progress is a difficult task. It is even more difficult when the author was himself involved in this revolution. I do not claim a prominent role in its leadership—I simply meant to participate humbly in my people's march for freedom. And while I reject any claim to neutrality, I deemed it a duty to maintain objectivity in writing the chapter that follows. However, the task to which I am devoted faces an additional difficulty regarding the availability of sources. The opacity of the police state of Tunisia's former dictator and president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has not facilitated the task. The sources for this article are diverse, including both written materials and events that were personally experienced. The testimony provided here is corroborated by a wide array of information gleaned from various media outlets, as well as the testimony of militants.
