ABSTRACT

According to More and Franks: Systematic observation permits a trained observer to use a set of guidelines and procedures to observe, record, and analyse observable events and behaviours, with the assumption that other observers using same observation instrument, and viewing the same sequence of events, would agree with the recorded data. Coaching researchers also need to ensure that systematic observation instruments are used in a consistent way; that is, researchers need to demonstrate that their data are reliable. As such, coaching researchers are advised to give consideration towards which tool they are going to utilize and the reasons for selecting a particular instrument. Following three reliability checks with participants, it was apparent that Siedentops criterion for inter-observer agreement was not being reached. The advantages to the use of video recording are many. The record of events can be reviewed over and over again a crucial feature of this procedure in allowing opportunities for clarifying uncertainties about the coding of behaviors.
