ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I am setting out to explore what appears to be the paradigmatic structure of applied Finance Ethics. In considering this practice, I shall sample theoretical positions from both economics and ethics, taking “finance” to be an empty qualifier. The resulting discussion suggests that, despite the paradox, we live under a regime of what Alain Badiou (2001a) inscribes as cynical nihilism. This chapter thus sits well with the critical themes of the rest of the volume and indeed the perspicacious reader will detect a certain similarity and sympathy with the views outlined by Vassili Joannidés and John McKernan in Chapter 12 of this volume.
