The origins of the law of armed conflict (LOAC) are perhaps not surprisingly found in the area of caring for the wounded and sick, as the most obvious persons who require protection from war.1 ‘The treatment of the wounded and sick has been at the heart of international humanitarian law since its modern inception.’2
