ABSTRACT

Stroke related changes, and especially aphasia, have a long-term negative impact on family caregivers (Bakas, Kroenke, Plue, Perkins, & Williams, 2006; Draper & Brocklehurst, 2007; White, Mayo, Hanley, & Wood-Dauphinee, 2003). Although caregiving can take on a variety of forms and have a range of repercussions, little is known about the process of caregiving, how it begins, how it changes the relationship with the care receiver and influences both members of the dyad. Answers to these questions will help guide speech-language pathologists who believe family intervention to be a challenge (Johansson, Carlsson, & Sonnander, 2011).
