ABSTRACT

Any discussion and debate on cyberbullying has to consider the voice of the industry and what its responsibilities are in reducing cyberbullying. However, we must first preface the chapter by acknowledging that it is simplistic to bracket all organisations under one heading, “the industry”. We will do so here, for ease, but “the industry” comprises a variety of different organisations including Internet Service Providers (ISPs), mobile phone companies (MPCs), social networking sites (SNS), music/video file sharing sites, online virtual worlds, online gaming sites, developers of computer games/computer hardware and software, providers of chat and instant messaging facilities etc. Although in some cases, the same organisation provides a number of these services, each will differ in what actions they may be able or even are legally allowed to undertake to reduce cyberbullying. Therefore, while generic “best practice” may well cover a large proportion of these various services, there is likely a need to have some specific guidance and action tailored to the service being offered.
