ABSTRACT

Over the past two decades, Taiwan’s information technology (IT) industry1 has grown very rapidly. In 1986, the value of its IT industry was only $2.1 billion; in 1992, it increased to $9.4 billion; in 2000, it reached as high as $47 billion. From 1986 to 2000, the average growth rate was 26 percent. This decreased slightly to $42.7 billion in 2001, due to the international economic downturn, but picked up to $48.4 billion in 2002 and $57.1 billion in 2003.
