ABSTRACT
Spiritualism has two broad definitions. In the older, more technically philosophical usage, it means simply a spiritual rather than a material view of things. Since the late nineteenth century, with the advent of the modern spiritualist movement, the term has come more narrowly to stand for the belief in a system of communication with the spirits of the dead.
