ABSTRACT

The following chapter will introduce the use of psychology within education. The field of educational psychology is vast and comprises many subsections, theories and contradictions. The chapter will introduce the main theories within educational psychology and will illustrate ways in which they seek to explain behavioural and cognitive development in children. These ideas will then be explored with reference to their use in education, and in particular the relationship between educational psychology and effective classroom practice. Finally, possible new directions of educational psychology will be explored.
