ABSTRACT

This chapter considers current accounts of globalization, its political and cultural implications. The educational dimension is considered including global institutions promoting education as a human right, but also in terms of the dissemination of a hegemonic model involving the management of populations and the formal ordering of knowledge. Specific vignettes are offered – from Qatar, South Africa and Mexico – indicating some of the complexities of globalized education in practice. Globalized education is then explored in terms of the contest between performativity and enlightenment ideals, especially in relation to the university. Finally, some reflections are offered on the extent that education has become a globalized force permeating all stages and aspects of contemporary life.
