ABSTRACT
For several generations, correspondence study stood alone as a medium of distance teaching and learning in postsecondary institutions in the United States. It provided not only an impetus for electronically assisted distance education formats, but an initial administrative home for many of them. Also, in many universities, correspondence study programs provided the funds and expertise that facilitated the pursuit of innovativebut sometimes foolish or ill-conceived-telecommunications schemes.
