ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an illustration of how task models derived within an evidence-centered design framework can be used in automatic item generation (AIG). Particular focus is given to the role of claims and evidence in creating task models. The claims and evidence were developed as part of the project entitled From Research to Practice: Redesigning Advanced Placement Science Courses to Advance Science Literacy and Support Learning with Understanding, partly funded by NSF (Award #ESI-0525575). 1 The chapter begins with a brief overview of AIG and evidence-centered design (ECD). Next, a detailed example of a task model and an item template that was used as input into an AIG program is provided. The chapter concludes with suggestions for future directions in development of task models for use in AIG.
