In his Introduction to Imperialism and Popular Culture, John MacKenzie suggests that the central role of imperialism must now be noted in all debates about culture, media and society between the 1870s and the 1940s. ¹ Sound advice, yet surely incomplete. In the full context of empire, the list should certainly include education.
