ABSTRACT

This chapter is set in a British 1 context and is divided into three parts. The first section considers the relationship between imperialism and formal historical study in the 1880s and subsequent years; the second revisits that relationship in the 1980s, and finally, in the third, some brief conclusions are drawn. Regrettably, in a piece of this length which takes a broad historical span for the purpose of indicating both change and continuity over time, many key issues can only be indicated rather than developed.
