ABSTRACT

The following study is dedicated to one whose work on ancient Macedonia has provided an inspiration and established the standard for those who follow. Charles Edson, much of whose life has been spent in academic institutions, is a veteran of the conflicts which characterize the activity of those who profess to ‘live the life of the mind’. This essay intends to probe a bit into Macedonian court life in the age of Alexander the Great by examining some aspects of the competition among intellectuals for the king's favor. More than most, Professor Edson knows that things have not changed very much.
