ABSTRACT

Think about the ways in which you present yourself to the world on a daily basis. The clothes we wear, the way we style our hair, the accessories we exploit, all these form an outward public expression of identity. These expressions are applications of semantic signs being used to form a meaningful public face. Think about it: if you roll into a briefing in last night’s clothes, with your hair in a mess, will the client place the same level of trust in you that they would if you turned up well groomed and smartly turned out? It may seem shallow, but this is literally publicity: the OED says that publicity is ‘being open to public observation or knowledge.’ 1
