ABSTRACT

In June 2010, according to Internet World Statistics, there were almost two thousand million users of the internet – compared to 360 million at the start of the decade. Over three-quarters of the population of North America, and six out of ten people in Oceania/Australia and Europe, are online. Although Africa (10.9 per cent), Asia (21.5 per cent) and the Middle East (29.8 per cent) lag behind, these are the areas of fastest growth. Indeed, 42 per cent of internet users are located in Asia – meaning in number terms three times as many people are online there as in North America.
