Children do not develop on their own. e process of human development is supported and guided by teams of individuals and groups. Moreover, this process is not haphazard. Over the course of development, children are steered along a particular path. is path is defi ned by many factors including, perhaps most signifi cantly, the culture in which the child lives and is expected to function as a competent and contributing member, albeit in diff erent ways at diff erent ages. Socialization is the term used to describe the process of development along a culturally prescribed path. More specifi cally, it is the process through which children acquire the beliefs, values, practices, skills, attitudes, behaviors, ways of thinking, and motives of their culture that together help children develop into eff ective and contributing members of the group.
