ABSTRACT

Jordan is a small state located in the cockpit of the Middle East with fi ve contiguous countries: Palestine (West Bank), Iraq, Israel, Syria and Saudi Arabia. It is therefore affected by most Middle Eastern turbulence. Like Iraq, it is virtually landlocked, with only 26 km of coastline; however, it does have access to the strategic Gulf of Aqaba. At times, its supportive relationship with Iraq has resulted in discord with other Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and the discontinuation of aid. Jordan has been the most consistent supporter of the Palestinians but both King Hussein and now King Abdullah have used skilful diplomacy in fostering generally good relationships on all sides.
