ABSTRACT

In 1947 British India was divided into the Muslim state comprising West and East Pakistan and the basically Hindu state of India. There followed three wars between the two states: 19471948, 1965 and 1971, after which East Pakistan became the separate nation of Bangladesh. Pakistan, the former West Pakistan, occupies the north-western part of the Indian subcontinent and, apart from India, the contiguous states are Iran, Afghanistan and China (Map 63).
