ABSTRACT

Mesoamerica comprises the geographic, political and cultural space that covers Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 1 It is a macro-region, with great ethnic and linguistic diversity yet with a cultural unity based on something that Paul Kirchoff defined more than six decades ago as the Mesoamerican complex—a geographic space that developed similar political, religious, irrigation and farming systems, and even architectural styles. 2
