ABSTRACT

First some background info as a starting point into my work as a Bboy/social worker. My mother still calls me Steve, but to most other people I am known as “Buddha.” This is my Bboy name that was bestowed upon me by my crew in the 1980s. I like to joke that it is because I’m the wise old man, but if the truth be known even when I was in my prime and very fit as a dancer, I always had a little belly. In fact, my crew used to rub my belly 130for good luck moments prior to going on stage to perform. I have been dancing since about 1975 and have been Bboying (break dancing as it was known in the media) since 1983. I am the founder of the Canadian Floor Masters, one of Canada’s oldest and most famous crews from back in the day, and our crew just recently celebrated our 27th anniversary in 2010. At the age of 51, I still perform but I’m not as quick or as agile as the young cats—but there is still the fire in my belly when the music drops and a cypher (Bboy dance circle) forms.*
