ABSTRACT

The African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC) was founded in February 1999 at a Regional Seminar on the theme ‘Parliament and Good Governance’ held in Kampala, Uganda. Thirty parliamentarians representing each African region participated at the week-long seminar. This diverse body of attendees ensured that a wide variety of experiences, relating to different strategies for combating corruption, were shared and discussed. This process of information-sharing convinced many of the participants of the usefulness of exchanging information and experiences about the fight against corruption, as the process helped identify best practices and new strategies that might work in their respective countries. Consequently, the conference participants felt the need to build upon their experience by maintaining contact with each other as well as reaching out to parliamentarians and parliamentary organizations throughout Africa. Thus, they decided to establish APNAC.
