ABSTRACT
You might think that doing research is rather like cooking: you just follow a set of procedures rather as you follow a recipe. There is, however, an important difference. In research, the methods themselves are underpinned by certain assumptions about the world, including the nature of reality and the nature of knowledge. In this chapter, we want to discuss some of these things that are usually hidden, so that you can better understand what we call the research process.
