ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the empirical evidence of the analysis of expenditures on sport products and services. Although the empirical analysis of expenditure in sport is much less developed in the literature than the analysis of participation in sport (Downward, Dawson, and Dejonghe, 2009), several studies from all around the world exist. The main objectives of this chapter are to explore the similarities and differences between the findings of these studies and to serve as a basis for further studies in the field of private expenditures on sport. The chapter is structured as follows. The first section provides an overview of the different studies, their research objectives, and the data employed. This is followed by a comparison of the portion of households/individuals that spend resources on sport. There is then a focus on the monetary value of sport in the different countries before discussing the factors that have been identified to influence sport spending behavior. The chapter closes with a short summary of the need for further research in this area.
