ABSTRACT

Hungary, a significant contributor to ISAF operations in Afghanistan in terms of GDP dollars to soldiers deployed, took over the Pul-i-Khumri PRT from the Netherlands on 11 September 2006. 1 Having installed itself at Camp Pannonia as the lead ISAF nation in Baghlan province, Hungary received praise for taking a nominally great share of the burden in Afghanistan, even if its input may have been but a drop in the ocean in absolute terms, or in light of the challenges faced. Four years later, after what seemed like a commendable record, it turned out that one of the US diplomatic cables Wikileaks released on 2 December 2010 happened to include a passage that was very critical of the Hungarian PRT's performance (US Embassy in Kabul 2009). This came as a surprise to many.
