ABSTRACT

On 1 August 2010 the Dutch commander, Kees van der Heuvel, transferred authority over the multinational Task Force Uruzgan (TFU) to the American– Australian Combined Team Uruzgan. For four years the Dutch had been responsible for a significant part of the TFU. Despite initial scepticism from larger NATO powers when the Dutch took command of Uruzgan in August 2006, the troubled province is now widely seen as one of the only areas where positive developments have occurred in Afghanistan's increasingly insecure south (TLO 2009). This chapter addresses the efforts and achievements of the Dutch during the time of their involvement in Uruzgan.
