ABSTRACT
In this paper the author discusses some of the problems of testing as they affect a specific examination, the London GCE. As may be seen, the tests used have many shortcomings. However, although the author refers to the practice of determining grades by ranking, he does not query its appropriateness. The reader might care to consider this in the light of the contribution by Glaser on criterion and norm referenced tests.
