ABSTRACT

This chapter details how the Royal Geographical Society engaged in the 2007 bicentenary of the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade through its ‘Crossing Continents: Connecting Communities’ project. Although the project was not initially conceived as a response to the wider marking of the bicentenary within the heritage sector, the development of one aspect of this project ‘Bombay Africans’ created a unique perspective in 2007. This chapter highlights the background and legacy of this innovative project with specific reference to the programme of community engagement that was a core feature of ‘Crossing Continents: Connecting Communities’.
