The legal context of champagne book
The Champagne region is in all ways one of the most highly regulated wine production areas in the world. International, European, national and local rules cross each other in this rather small part of the wine world and fix a particularly complex legal status for the wine of Champagne. The prestige and the reputation of champagne and the globalization of the wine markets partly explain this complexity. The most important element, however, in the making of champagne’s legal status is its rich and even turbulent history. Legal settlements, especially related to the decision-making process, express compromises or lessons from the past. In fact, these settlements are the expression of an original system of checks and balances which remind us in many ways of the control mechanisms of political science and constitutional theory. Instead of giving full power to one single institution or organization, decision-making stems from the cross-fertilization of points of view and the clash of different, not always converging, interests.
