ABSTRACT
Introduction Robin Murray and I are exact contemporaries: we joined the Maudsley Hospital together in October 1972. Our research careers took different tracks, but have been in many ways complementary, and I have always been aware of his direction of travel in a way that has been useful to me. It is a pleasure to me to write this chapter in tribute to his enormous and thoughtful productivity, and in acknowledgement of his influence on my thinking.
