ABSTRACT

Introduction The greatest consumers of cannabis round the world come from Western Europe, Australia and North America. In Europe, the UK has among the highest lifetime prevalence for cannabis use in young adolescents. Nevertheless, recent data show a slow decline in its consumption. This would be a reassuring prospect if at the same time significant changes had not been reported on the type of cannabis that is taking over the UK market (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2009). Sensimilla, street name skunk, is the most potent type of cannabis and now covers 70% of the cannabis UK market share. If a person was to ask for cannabis in southeast London, they would be 7 times out of 10 more likely to be offered skunk than traditional hash (resin) or traditional herbal cannabis (Hardwick & King, 2008).
