ABSTRACT

Argentina has experienced important family transformations in union formation, union dissolution, fertility, and family roles. Recent decades have been marked by increases in the age at marriage, marital dissolution, nonmarital births, and cohabitation. Family roles have also been altered, with women increasingly contributing to the economic support of their families. This chapter synthesizes what is known about these changes and places them in the broader context of family and social trends. Included is a summary of past research on behaviors, values, attitudes, and beliefs in relation to family life. The period covered is the second half of the 20th century to the present, with emphasis on the last decades.
