ABSTRACT
Turkey is a very interesting case for the study of diversity and change in family systems. The following analysis describes how three cultural layers have contributed to this diversity and change: Turkey’s history as a peasant society, the religious influences of Islam in a basically heterogeneous setting of the Ottoman Empire, and the cultural revolution in the process of modern nation building. Together, these three layers have helped to create the exceptional cultural heterogeneity and family life seen in Turkey today.
