ABSTRACT

This book is about family change around the world. It considers historical trends in family behavior, attitudes, beliefs, and relationships, with an emphasis on theoretical models for explaining this family change. Particularly central to this book are the ideational and motivational underpinnings of family life and the ways that attitudinal and value changes have influenced family behavior and relationships. The book takes a global perspective on family change-and ideational influences on that family change-including case studies from virtually every region of the world, including Africa, the Middle East, Europe, both North and South America, and East, South, and Southeast Asia.
