ABSTRACT
African societies are notable for the preeminence of ideals concerning the family: the solidarity maintained among members of extended family groups, the power of and respect engendered by family elders, and the importance placed on having many children. These values have structured African societies in the past and continue to do so, perhaps all the more so since the young independent states are encountering many problems in fostering new constitutive values for their nations.
