ABSTRACT

Defining emboDiment Cartoons are good indices of the degree to which ideas are important beyond the rarified walls of the academy. Thus, Joey the Disembodied Head1, shown in Fig. 8.1, provides a bit of folk evidence that the Cartesian position on the split between mind and body permeates our society. Of course, the cartoon does not accept, but rather pokes fun at, the absurdity of dualism. It thus sets the stage for the counter-position that forms the foundation for this chapter and the entire volume in which it appears: embodiment.
