Case Synopsis Soon is a 19-year-old, Korean American woman attending a 4-year university in Southern California. Over the past year, Soon has become increasingly preoccupied with her physical appearance. She had been self-conscious of her “single eyelids” since she was a young child, but more recently she began considering “Asian eyelid surgery.” In addition, despite her petite fi gure, she counted calories, skipped breakfast, and avoided eating out with friends for fear that she would be tempted to overeat. Soon was convinced that a prettier face and a thinner body would help her feel more confi dent. Her roommate Kimi became concerned when she noticed that Soon seemed sad much of the time and was withdrawing from her friends. Kimi decided to speak to Soon about meeting with a therapist at their university counseling center before Soon became more depressed or took any drastic measures to change her appearance.
