ABSTRACT

The Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) of 1968 was the first legislation in the United States that was concerned with making the built environment accessible to people with disabilities. Activists who were largely people with mobility impairments, including many veterans whose mobility depended on use of a wheelchair, were key advocates for this legislation. The emphasis of the ABA was on making the environment accessible to people with mobility impairments, and its applicability was limited to federal and federally-funded facilities.
