ABSTRACT

Reading skill has, as its core, single words. When we consider phonology, we talk about the sounds of a language and their combination into words. When we consider orthography, we talk about the spelling of single words and the overall language structure that dictates spelling rules for single words. When we consider semantics, we talk about qualities of a word’s meaning that give it its place in the lexicon. Even when we consider comprehension, we discuss the feeding of wordlevel, lexical information into a system that can build and maintain a representation of text that is being read.
