ABSTRACT
In the United States today, as never before, education holds the key to prosperity. The bachelor’s degree now strongly serves a gating function. In 2004, for example, those who had graduated from college earned on average twice as much as those whose education stopped at the end of high school (U.S. Department of Labor, 2004).
