ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to explain and illustrate a conversation-analytic approach to understanding role enactments during organizational meetings. In this chapter, we limit our discussion to the enactment of one role: chairperson of upper management meetings. When an upper management meeting is conducted within an organization, it is a common practice for a single participant to act as the chairperson. Although the CEO of a corporation often chairs upper management meetings, there are occasions in which this is not the case.
