ABSTRACT
I have had the opportunity to participate in non-campus based graduate programs offered by the Communication Studies Department at West Virginia University (WVU) continuously since 1974. For most of that period I have served as coordinator of those programs, and for 3 years I served as director of all off-campus programs for WVU. I currently coordinate two graduate degree programs in communication (Communication in Instruction and Corporate and Organizational Communication) as well as service courses in health communication for graduate programs in health promotion. These experiences have enabled me to observe the potential for extended learning programs in the field of communication on a firsthand basis.
