ABSTRACT

The influential model of writing by Hayes and Flower (1980) focused on the cognitive factors involved in composition. Although it succeeded in laying the foundation for a cognitive theory of text production, it drew criticism for failing to address the affective (Brand, 1989) and social (Nystrand, 1989) dimensions of writing. A recent revision of the model has broached these concerns and underscored the need to consider how working memory supports cognition in writing (Hayes, chapter 1 in this volume).
