ABSTRACT
Excitement and suspense are essential patterns of experience in film and television narratives. These specific qualities of experience are sought out by the audience. The expectation of experiencing excitement or suspense motivates the reception of films and television programs, and the promise of such forms of experience is one of their utility values. This chapter focuses mainly on qualities of the experiences of suspense and excitement and the conditions under which they arise.
