ABSTRACT

It all started in 1991, with a telephone call from a friend in the plastic surgery division of our medical school. He was worried about an ethical problem and wanted to discuss it with someone who taught medical ethics. We knew him to be a good doctor. One of the authors, Dave, had worked with him on a program about ethics and the treatment of patients in the burn unit, and on a subcommittee to design a human values program for the medical school. He was the kind of colleague we liked and wanted to help.
