ABSTRACT

Recent discussions of problems associated with alcohol abuse have emphasized the increasing importance of interpersonal influence processes in both the intervention and treatment of such ailments (Denzin, 1987; Seibold 8c Thomas, 1994; Wiseman, 1983). Most important, these discussions have highlighted the significance of viewing alcohol-related communication from a transactional perspective (Thomas & Seibold, 1996). A transactional perspective emphasizes not only the importance of identifying the interpersonal factors that prompt communication and the aims of those messages, but also the challenge of engaging in sequential communication attempts in order to accomplish one's goals (Dillard, 1990). The following scenario explores the role of communication in alcohol-related situations.
